About SUMOBOTS.
SUMOBOTS is the ultimate test of engineering, strategy, and robotic combat. Your mission: design, build, and program an autonomous bot to push opponents out of the ring. This is not just any competition—it's a battleground where only the best survive.
For UNSW students, it starts here. The Standard Stream is exclusive to UNSW, giving students a chance to develop their skills and battle it out among their peers. But the true test lies ahead — The Open Stream is open to all universities, bringing the best student engineers from other institutions into the ring.
Will your bot rise to the challenge?

The prize pool for SUMOBOTS 2025 is over $2000! The exact prize breakdown for each category is currently being finalised.
You can participate only in teams of 2 to 6 members. If you are interested in participating in the SUMOBOTS but do not have a team, we will assist you in connecting with other individual participants to form a team.
Anyone can participate in the competition, but eligibility depends on the chosen stream. The Standard Stream is exclusively for UNSW students, while the Open Stream welcomes both UNSW and non-UNSW participants.
No prior experience is necessary! We will host workshops to help you get started with building and programming your Sumobot.
The Sumobots Standard stream is ideal for complete beginners, and students looking to develop their technical skills. In our workshops we teach you all the skills you need to create a sumobot from scratch. In 2024, 5/8 quarter-finalist teams had no experience before sumobots!
Stay tuned for updates on our social media channels. We will announce the competition dates, workshops, and registration details soon!
